Fort Eustis (VA) lockdown due to possible shots fired

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Fort Eustis was placed on precautionary lockdown Friday afternoon, according to officials.

Capt. Kevin Whitlatch of Fort Eustis told WAVY.com that the lockdown was lifted shortly before 1 p.m., and that the base resumed normal operations.

Officials said this was not an active shooter situation.

Joint Base Langley-Eustis issued a news release around 12:30 p.m. that confirmed shots were fired outside of building 650, which is the in-processing center, at 11:30 a.m. Friday.

Officials say there have been no reports of injuries. WAVY News 10’s Jason Marks spoke to an official at the base, who said three contractors working on a roof reported hearing possible gunshots and that report is what led to the lockdown.

The incident is still under investigation.
